The Buffy Diaries 03-24-2021

Buffynicity #1: I was thinking about finding a paddle in my 3D library for the last couple of days and in T7S Kelso is talking about pong paddles and Forman has one of those wooden paddles with the ball attached.

Buffynicity #2: I was thinking about women saying “the vag” a few minutes ago, the way they speak impersonally about their bodies sometimes, and then Donna says she knows Forman is going for “the bra”.

Buffynicity #3: Yesterday I was tracing the development of Jennifer’s musical tastes back to Lou Reed and going over that again and again, then today the gang talks about Lou Reed being in New York City.

The Buffy Diaries 03-20-2021

Buffynicity #1: There was a cowbell in the intro to a secene from T7S. I think it was from “American Band”. It made me think of the skit “More Cowbell”. Then a few minutes later Eric said “I thought Blue Oyster Cult was the music of the revolution.”

The “More Cowbell” sketch on SNL was a year after this episode (22) aired.

The Buffy Diairies 03-13-2021

Buffynicity #1: I folded my laundry today and Rachel was foldling laundry in this episode.Scary Buffynicity #2: Today I’ve been retelling myself an old joke. In my movie “Bang-Shang-A-Lang”, Congressman Biff Hardassian has two German shepherds named Haldemann and Erlichmann. I haven’t thought of this joke in what seems like years, but today it occurred to me again and I thought of it several times. Then in tonight’s episode of Friends, Chandler is wearing doggie slippers i.e. a pair of slippers that look like dogs. This is so totally specific that it freaks me out.Even Scarier Buffynicity #3: Over the last couple of days I’ve been listening to Phantoms by the Fixx and working a lot on my story The Darkening of the Light, thinking about 80s rock and looking at the Apple Music Playlist “Rock Hits 1985”, which I added to my library. I was thinking about Duran Duran and how Simon Le Bon is still married to his wife, Yasmin. I was thinking that is cool, but I wondered if she was the same person as Yasmine Bleeth. I never think about this question, which is why it is colossally weird that Joey and Chandler just sat down to watch Baywatch and talked about being in love with Yasmine Bleeth. As a little extra, I just looked her up and found that 1985 was the year she married Simon.Totally fucked up Buffynicity #4: An hour or so ago I was rocking out to “Shakedown” by Bob Seeger and I visualized my guardian angels as backup singers. Then just now Phoebe was recording her song and was surprised by three backup singers behind her.Funny Buffynicity #5: I think it was yesterday, but certainly in the last three days I was driving home thinking about the velociraptors from Jurassic Park, specifically because I’ve been thinking of nasty things to say about Hollywood, like no one has cared about special effects since Jurassic Park showed they could put CGI creatures on the screen. Just now Ross was on the phone telling someone that Dino from Flintstones could not be a velociraptor.

The Buffy Diaries 03-12-2021

Buffynicity #1: I just did a facebook video where I talked about “red meat”, and then Monica joked that her boyfriend was a “doctor of meat”. Is this major? I wouldn’t have thought so but …

Buffynicity #2: A little while ago I was thinking about doing a video beating my stuffed Ewok with a baseball bat and then in the episode Monica’s father walks in the room with a baseball bat.

Buffynicity #3: I was listening to “More Than A Feeling” today and really clicking with the characters from The Darkening. I talked about it in my video. And for some reason I am thinking this is absolutely the best episode of Friends yet. All the characters are well known and in full swing. Almost no exposition, all revelation. I feel I’m seeing more in this show for the same reason I can sense my characters more deeply. I suddenly got the idea of making The Darkening some kind of combination of Friends and T7S.

Buffynicity #4: Additionally, Joey “moves out” temporarily and I think that’s a resonance with Jennifer dying, but I’m to shift the purpose of the story to talking about life after death. And I just realized Phoebe is talking about the afterlife when she says her “small blue dot” is the way her mother sees her from heaven.

These aren’t terribly strong or specific Buffynicities, but that’s okay because this episode felt fantastic, with everything clicking and flowing in what I would call ecstasy.

Buffynicity #5: Yesterday I dreamed about “moving out” of an empty storefront right before I started “The One Where Joey Moves Out”. This morning I dreamed of moving out of another apartment, this one also in a state of disrepair. I was living with my roommate from college and I felt his spirit strongly when I woke up. The other key thing I still need to decipher is that I had several white boards and I was having my old rommate, whom I’ll call “Dan”, donate them to charity. I had thousands of markers lined up on the walls.

If I hadn’t just written that paragraph I wouldn’t have seen the connection … as I woke up I felt genuinely connected to this spirit, so I decided to call him “Dan” and he will have some part in the character of Dan Dare, or Gavin Arnold, in The Darkening. And just as I don’t have a lot of specific synchronicities today, I have an ecstatic sense of the flow of all these beings around me. I wish I knew how to express it.

Another thing I’m going to note is that I also started listening to Motorhead’s “Inferno” today. This and “Phantoms” by the Fixx are my new focus, musically.

The Buffy Diaries 03-11-2021

Buffynicity #1: I just realized that I had a dream last night, thinking about moving out of the place I was in, and then today I started “The One Where Joey Moves Out”. This is explainable as some kind of subsconscious expectation, since I knew this episode was coming up, but still it’s a nice blend of waking and dream.

The Buffy Diaries 03-09-2021

3/9/2021 12:01 PM Buffynicity #1: Just 14 minutes ago I reposted a Facebook memory of a live video from last March, commenting that I was unemployed at the time. Then I finished off the last 9 minutes of the T7S episode I’ve been working on, and Mr. Forman’s boss’s son announces that the plant is closing, so Mr. Forman is going to be unemployed. That was amazing timing! It gives me A New Hope.

The Buffy Diaries 03-06-2021

Buffynicity #1: Today I was thinking about Cassie and how she would relate to Colonel Hyst. For the first time ever I imagined a comedy scene in which she spills a drink on him, just to give them a funny way to interact. Just now in episode 20 Donna spilled a drink on Mr. Forman’s boss’s son. That is pretty amazing.
